The right treatment
for your veins.

Every patient receives a duplex ultrasound assessment before treatment. The method is chosen based on anatomy, vein size, and clinical findings — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Endothermal · Gold Standard

LASER (EVLA)

Endovenous Laser Ablation uses laser energy delivered via a thin fibre inside the vein to close the affected trunk vein from within. Minimally invasive, highly effective, and performed under local tumescent anaesthesia.

Day procedure. Walking immediately afterwards. Suitable for most great and small saphenous vein incompetence.

Local tumescent anaesthesia No general anaesthesia Same-day discharge Walking same day
Non-thermal · No Tumescent

MOCA

Mechanochemical Ablation (ClariVein) combines mechanical disruption with chemical sclerosant — closing the vein without heat and without the need for tumescent anaesthesia. Virtually painless, no bruising.

Preferred for patients with needle sensitivity, or where anatomy makes laser less suitable. Equally effective for many trunk vein patterns.

No tumescent required Minimal discomfort No bruising Same-day discharge
Non-thermal · Adhesive

VenaSeal (Glue)

Medical cyanoacrylate adhesive is injected to seal the vein permanently. No heat, no tumescent anaesthesia, no compression stockings required post-procedure. One puncture site only.

Excellent for patients who cannot wear compression, or who require a very rapid return to normal activity.

Single puncture No compression needed Immediate activity
Surgical · Complex Cases

Surgical stripping

For anatomically complex cases, recurrent varicosities, or where endovenous methods are not suitable, surgical stripping under general or spinal anaesthesia remains the gold-standard option.

Performed at Dr. Pizzera's dedicated operating theatre in Graz or Schladming. Phlebectomy (removal of bulging varicosities) is routinely combined with trunk vein treatment.

Complex & recurrent cases Phlebectomy included Member DGP

Assessment first.
Treatment tailored to you.

No vein treatment is planned without a thorough duplex ultrasound assessment. This is what separates a specialist practice from a walk-in clinic.

01

Duplex ultrasound assessment

A full colour-duplex scan of the venous system to map reflux, identify affected trunk veins, assess perforators, and rule out deep vein pathology. This takes approximately 30 minutes and is the foundation of all treatment decisions.

02

Treatment planning & discussion

Dr. Pizzera reviews the ultrasound findings with you and recommends the most appropriate method — LASER, MOCA, VenaSeal, or surgery. You receive a written quote and treatment plan before any decision is made.

03

Procedure day

Endovenous treatments (LASER / MOCA / VenaSeal) are performed under local anaesthesia in our own theatre. You walk out afterwards. Surgery for complex cases requires a short stay.

04

Post-procedure care & follow-up

Instructions for compression and activity are provided in English. Remote follow-up by video at 2–4 weeks. Duplex scan confirmation of vein closure can be arranged locally at home if needed.

Your questions,
answered honestly.

Which method is best for me — LASER, MOCA, or glue?

The duplex ultrasound assessment determines which method is most appropriate for your specific anatomy. Dr. Pizzera discusses this with you in detail. In many cases, the choice also reflects patient preference — MOCA and glue avoid tumescent anaesthesia injections entirely.

Can both legs be treated in the same session?

Yes — when both great saphenous veins are involved, they can be treated simultaneously in the same procedure. This is included in the €4,000 two-trunk-vein price and is the most efficient option for international patients.

Is it safe to fly shortly after vein treatment?

For endovenous treatments (LASER/MOCA), flying the day after is generally considered safe with compression stockings and adequate hydration. Dr. Pizzera provides specific written guidance on post-procedure travel for each patient.

Do I need compression stockings after the procedure?

After LASER and MOCA, compression is recommended for 1–2 weeks. After VenaSeal, compression is typically not required. Stockings can be purchased in Austria before your flight home, or brought from home — we advise on grade and type.

Are spider veins (thread veins) included?

Thread veins (telangiectasias) are treated separately by microsclerotherapy. This is not included in the trunk vein packages and is quoted separately. Please mention if thread veins are also a concern when you enquire.

What if I have recurrent varicose veins after previous surgery?

Recurrent veins are a speciality. Dr. Pizzera assesses recurrent cases carefully with duplex ultrasound and recommends the most appropriate technique — often MOCA or phlebectomy. Please bring any previous operative reports when enquiring.

Can UK private insurers cover treatment in Austria?

Some policies include international treatment. We provide itemised invoices and operative reports in English. Check your policy's "treatment abroad" clause. Patients travelling from Switzerland benefit from significant cost savings even without insurance.

Where exactly is the procedure performed?

In Dr. Pizzera's own dedicated operating theatre — either in Graz (Peter Rosegger Straße 101) or Schladming (Martin-Luther-Straße 32). Both are fully equipped for all endovenous and surgical vein procedures. Not in a large hospital, which keeps costs and waiting times down.
